<sigh> I'll offer my opinion here... (Please remember, opinions are
like... And usually the other guy's stinks.)

System: Beige 266mhz G3 DT. 512mb RAM, internal 6gb ATA drive, (2) 4gb
SCSI Cheetah drives internal as well. All tests performed on the ATA
drive. Internal 24x stock CD-ROM (Mitsumi?) External 6x Apple CD-ROM
and 6-?-24 Yamaha burner.

Install wouldn't happen from internal CD. Ended up using the old Apple
external to install.

I went from 9.2.1 to X then to Jaguar. The X.1 transition wasn't bad.
It was fun to play with the new interface and all, but I noticed a
glitch that made me spend most of my time booted to Classic. What?
Browser performance. I have dial-up and OE under Classic typically
loads web pages at 48k speeds. OE under X loads at 14.4k speeds. No
other changes except the OS. Not good. Off to the modem speed test
page... Confirmed. 44-48k in OS 9.2.2, Less than 14.4k in X.

All else seems to work fine. iTunes, iBurn, iMovie...

So... Free education distro of Jag arrives shortly after the holidays.
  Maybe it's better...

Once again, internal CD-ROM ain't cutting it. Install from external
again. Run system update and find that with the shipped by Apple CDs
require about 120mb of patches to be functional. Over dial-up? Uh huh...
sure... School has a big pipe and I have a laptop. Get the updates.
Install them. We now have X.2.3. Then straight to OE and modem speed
test page. No improvement. Walk away for a few days. Client calls and
needs something I have. iBurn here we come. WTF? No burner. "The CDRW
attached to SCSI... is not recognized" or some such. So boot to Classic
and use Toast to burn. No floppy I can deal with. New burner to run
this OS? I don't think so.

Safari comes out... Boot to X.3.2 and download. Nice alpha test... Not
ready for beta yet.

All in all, not worth the trouble (to me). When I'm so inclined I'll
wipe the drive and reinstall X.1 (actually X.1.5 by the time you get all
the patches installed) and run that when I feel the need to play with X.
Might work better on an 800mhz G4, but I ain't got one of those...

Ya pays yer money and takes yer choice...

Now to answer your individual questions:

1.> Don't know and I'm too lazy to walk upstairs to check. I started
with an empty drive. IIRC, one can partition and install in a 2gb
partition. Mind you, that's Classic AND X.

2.> Yes, though at the price of ATA drives, I'd buy a big one. OWC has
a Maxtor 30gb for $70.

3.> Rumor has it that X will run in 64mb. I know that it wasn't happy
in 128mb. Much happier in 256 and ecstatic in 512.

Have fun.
