After installing OS X (same problem in both 10.1.5 and Jaguar), I've run
Classic to update the CP startup (it's now 9.2.3 on the OS 9 system disk).
However, once I boot into OS 9 (my spouse has floppies she needs to use), I
can't get back to OS X except by reinstalling from the OS X CD. No matter
how many times I choose the OS X partition from the Startup CP it reboots
into OS 9.

You need to download System Disk 2.6.2 from Apple. Run this utility and
choose your os x sytem. Then run the Startup Disk Control panel, select your os
x system and reboot. You're problem will be solved, as it was for me, based on
advice from this list.

Switching from X to 9.2 works normally.

If I use System Disk without using Startup Disk afterwards, the os x system may
not see the drives connected to my native ata bus. (My os x drive is on a pci
card.) At least that's what happens on my system.

I don't know why Beige computers have this frustrating problem but this does
neatly solve it and I switch back and forth quite frequently and comfortably.
