G'day from Oz, Tom. There are 3 main downloaders for the Mac, two of which access the Gnuttella network, which is where most Mac stuff is found.
LimeWire... (Gnuttella) This is a very flaky program, for 9 & X. It's developers don't seem to be responding to concerned users any more. There's a free advertising version, and an add free US$5 per 6 months Pro version. On a 56k modem, it maxxes out at 4 hosts. Try to change it, and the bloody thing drops back to 3. Acquisition... (Gnuttella) X only. Uses the LimeWire Gnuttella engine, so has some of the same bugs. However, I find it's a BIT more stable than the LimeWire interface. It downloads a bit faster, and accesses far more hosts (12-14 sometimes). Limited trial, then $15 to buy DrumBeat... X only. Accesses the PC net. Huge number of files, lots of mp3's. Doesn't save partial downloads, so won't resume when re-starting. You have to stay on long enough to get the whole file(s). I think it's US $30. Hardly any Mac programs.
