I think it is true that using a drive on the ATA card eliminates the 8gig
requirement.  My x boot is indeed set up on the Acard card.  Works fine.  I
think most of the tripups have been handled on this list.  Why not try it and
ask questions if you have a problem.   My system is pretty reliable running both
os, though it was a bit of a struggle for a while.

This list can be really helpful... it was for me.
