I remember reading something like that too and I think it was in the docs for
the Radeon 7000.  If I remember correctly, it was due to limitations in the pci
bus of the older machines.  (Do the newer ones run faster?) So maybe that is it. 

But I still don't know why dv stream in works fine but out is jerky.  Maybe it's
a processor thing, though I have a 466 mhz G4 zif.  

There's a bottleneck somewhere.
