Excuse me? The second DVD is for the *source* disk...iDVD shouldn't care 
if your'e getting the source disk image from a hard drive, a dvd, a 
massive arraay of floppy disk drioves or a million monkeys with abaci...

However, a firewire hard drive to hold disk images should be pefectly 
fine, and will likely work better than using a DVD drive to copy the 
disks from.

You always want to have your source be faster than your destination device.
