Strewth Marc, that's a bit drastic. If Kevin is using Netscape as his
mail client, all his eMail goes down the gurgler, not to mension all
his bookmarks & history.

Kevin, if you want to try Marcs suggestion, DON'T trash the file, but
just move it out of the Preferences folder. Duplicate the moved folder
in case you stuff up the next instructions.

Start up the Netscape Profile Manager (if that's what it's called in
5), delete the old name from the list, and create a new user the same
name as your previous name.

Log onto Netscape, and see if your problems have gone away. If not,
then the preferences are not at fault. Otherwise, a re-install or
update would be best.

If everything is ok, then you can gradually add items from your old
preferences into the newly created folder, starting with your mail
backup.

NOTE that when Netscape creates a new user, eg 'Brian', inside 'Brian'
is another folder with a meaningless name, eg 'upyvbmtu.slt' DON'T
replace this folder, but open it and gradually drag your previous items
into it, and replace the new items. The old items will be inside
another meaningless named folder eg "Brian:upyourstu.slt'.

I would replace the items in the following order, trying Netscape after
each move.

Mail
Bookmarks.html
History.dat
History.mab
cookies.txt
prefs.bak
prefs.js

After that, whatever you like.
Once you find the offending file, just remove it. Netscape should
re-build it (or you could copy the same file from somewhere else)

This is a typical list in the folder (from Netscape 7). I don't know
the difference from a Netscape 5 list

4237114792.s
abook.mab
bookmarks.html
Cache
chrome
cookies.txt
default-connections.rdf
default-invite.rdf
default-messages-icq.rdf
default-messages.rdf
history.dat
history.mab
localstore.rdf
Mail
mimeTypes.rdf
panacea.dat
panels.rdf
prefs.bak
prefs.js
search.rdf
Security
US
XUL FastLoad File

An aside ::: Because I hated Netscape preferences holding all that
info, I used to create a folder at root level (called 'Netscape
users'), and navigate to it for each user. If you ever want to do a
clean system install, or back up your browser stuff, it's way easier
not being in the Prefs folder.

And what, you ask, was the beginning of it all?
And it is this......
Existence that multiplied itself
For sheer delight of being
And plunged with numberless trillions of forms
So that it might
find
itself
innumerably
