in my experience, once netscape crashes it often develops a problem where it crashes often. the fix is to delete the "pop state" file, the history, and the cookie files and the cache folder. netscape will recreate all of these, i'm not sure which one(s) cause the problem. i've also had problems when the mail files got sufficiently huge. netscape has .snm files for each mail folder, they are summaries and also get messed up and can actually be larger than the mail folder proper. these can also be deleted and regenerate the next time you empty the mail trash.
i've inspected these files before and found old emails that were never even in the folder the summary is for, odd things seem to happen to the summary or ".snm" files. of course you also want to give netscape at least twice the ram it thinks it needs due to the memory leaks etc. no need to mess with the preference files, but if you do dump them, you do not lose your email and bookmarks, the files are still there but you may have to create a new profile and move the old files into it to recover them. i've moved old mail folders into the mail folder temporarily to read archived email, and it works fine, netscape doesn't care if you move mail files in and out, they can be backed up etc. without problem. hope this helps. now if this all started happening after a hardware upgrade, then the original and possibly later crashes may be related to that, but in any case you'll want to clean up the mess. the .snm files won't crash it as far as i know, but they definitely do get corrupted and i delete them periodically just as part of maintaining the system (the wasted drive space hardly matters, but the corrupted files can't be doing me any good!).
