Part of the problem is that it isn't easy to check whether Altivec is activated or not. There is a program called Altivec Fractal Carbon Demo (ree on the web) that runs in 8.6 or up that will tell you whether Altivec is detected and draw a fractal picture either with or without the help of Altivec. The "with" time is at least ten times faster. Impressive.
This is the only program I know that actually tells you whether you've got Altivec or not. Without the Softlogix Altivec activator program, my OWC 466 zif does not run Altivec in my Beige MT. With it, it does. Supposedly, you get Altivec activation by reinstalling os 9.x but, if memory serves, this did not work for me. The installer may be reading the machine identification rather than looking at which processor is present. OS X automatically activates Altivec.
