What to purchase? More RAM.I am driving a Beige G3/333 with 256 MB RAM and am wanting to upgrade. I went to the OWC site and found two upgrades that I can afford.
OWC MercuryZA G4/450-466MHz Altivec Enhanced ZIF with [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2:1 Backside Cache. New with 2yr OWC Warranty. (OWCZ4450MA) $189.94
Sonnet Encore/ZIF G3/500MHz w/1024k 2:1 Backside Cache, 10x multiplier - For ZIF based Macs. New, 3yr Sonnet Warranty. (STIEG35001M) $169.95
From the speed specs at the site it would seem that the G3/500 upgradeis faster than the G4/450.
Advice and suggestions about which to purchase and why will be appreciated.
But for the G3 vs. G4 thing is Altivec. If you do a lot of graphic intensive stuff (i.e. Photoshop, Illustrator, or that sort of thing) than you want the G4 with Altivec. I'm not sure how this relates to games.
There are two or three other issues with Beige upgrades. As I remember, all of these are covered in the tech section at OWC. http://eshop.macsales.com/Tech/index.cfm?load=zif.html or at Lowendmac.com http://www.lowendmac.com/ppc/g3.shtml
1) The G4 firmware update, you need to update the firmware in a Beige G3 to run a G4.
2) The Royal Voltage Regulator Module, which is in some Beiges, is incompatible with upgraded processors.
You need to hit one of the sites with pictures to get this.
3) Getting the Altivec parts of the OS9 loaded. The installer doesn't load them if you don't have a G4 in the computer. I had to rerun the 9.2. upgrade after installing a G4.
When I did it, I spent more time researching it before hand than I did doing the actual install.
