Other than by physically installing new ROM dimms you cannot upgrade the firmware in beige G3's.
Updateable firmware only came in with the B&W G3's.
Thanks for that - where does that leave the Altivec question on a Beige?
No problem, afaik.
Under OS 9, you install the appropriate plug-ins for the programs that use it, like Photoshop, if needed. OS9 has Altivec libraries built in. (which is why the Powerlogix extension is confusing)
Under OSX it's enabled by default; if it's there, it's used.
Powerlogix online documentation is confusing on this issue, saying you need to install an OS9 extension to take advantage of Altivec in OS X...which is not true.
PowerLogix' product is also the only one I've seen that claims to need an extension to enable the Altivec unit in the G4, and may have something to do with their board design.
Sonnet does not have a separate altivec enabler; and I know that I used the Sonnet cache software that came with my G3 upgrade card with my Metabox JoeCard G4 upgrade with no problems and it was recognized as a G4 (the Sonnet splash screen said 'Sonnet G4' when it came up on the screen)
I know that the altivec unit was working, since I had software that used it (it was settable via preferences) and there was a noticeable difference between the Altivec on and off.
