If it is an issue with fonts, the slowness is from the LaserWriter not your G4. I don't remember which fonts are native to your machine, but they reside in the printer's memory. If you try to print something that uses fonts that are not already in memory, the computer has to download them to the printer before the printer can print.
There are two ways to get around this problem. You can add memory to the printer. But, it is rather hard to find anymore. (maybe ebay or the swap list)
You can also add a hard drive to the printer, and store fonts on it. There are bunches of issues related to adding a hard drive for font storage: size limits, Apple ROM issues, connection issues to name a few. The biggest problem is that the printer will check each and every font at start up. So, if you happen to turn the printer off for some reason, it will be painfully slow getting itself ready to print again.
