well I forked out $10.00 for tube of thermal paste Scrached the black/rubber pad off the bottom of the G3 heat sink attached a CPU fan from a pentium heat sink applied small dabs of thermal past to the CPU Over Clocked to 450
Stress Test...
Played Q3 for 1 hour before it crashed, but the computer did not lock up, just the app quit
Played iTunes and surfed for 2 days.
No core panics "yet" Computer is notably faster (not quite the 1 Gig G4 I want) CPU temp is now 40 degrees, down from 42.
Fingers are crossed....

It was the overclocked CPU. I overclocked my G3 400 to 450. The system runs at 36 degrees at 400 MHz and 40 degrees at 450 MHz. I guess the problem got worse with the additional hard drives I installed. Possibly more work for the CPU or higher temperatures.
I understand no one was loosing any sleep about my daily lockups. Just wanted to post my resolution.
OVERCLOCK == BAD (in my case)
