so it is my understanding that I have to buy an APPLE branded airport card to usein the airport slot on my gigabit ethernet mac, or will just any old generic one will work?
There is no such thing as 'any old generic' one.
Despite having a similar form factor, the Airport card is NOT a pcmcia card, and the two types are not interchangeable.
You need to either buy a real Airport card, or a supported PCI, USB or ethernet-based wireless adapter.
