Yes, that is what I did.
The IDE Controller Chip configured in the B&W / V1 MOBO does not reliably support a
master-slave hard drive hookup.
There are numerous on-line posts describing this problem
Apple solved this problem by updating to a V2 MOBO, which replaced the original IDE Controller chip
If you are experiencing a problem, you most likely have the V1 MOBO.
I eliminated this problem by purchasing a Sonnet Tempo ATA66 IDE Controller PCI card.
There are other equivalent cards available.
