I second the Griffin iMic and cable, but I do all the recording and editing
with a cheaper program called Sound Studio by Felt Tip Software. You can
download a two week fully working trial copy of Sound Studio off the Felt
Tip website http://www.felttip.com/products/soundstudio/ and get a lot done
with it before the trial expires (it only counts the days you use it).

If you have a boombox with a tape player in it, you can plug in the cable
from the iMac into the boombox's headset jack and play the audiotapes into
your Mac for Sound Studio (or Peak or other such sound app) to record. You
can play radio music into the Mac the same way. Or, if you want to record
old records, plug that cable into the headset jack, speaker ports, or tape
out ports (the best I think) of a record player/stereo amplifier and play
the records into the Mac (you may need a cheap Radio Shack adapter(s) to be
able to plug your stereo mini-cable into old equipmnt of that type, which
has RCA-type jacks). Most Radio Shacks have knowledgeable people who can
tell you what you need.

After you've made and saved a recording in Sound Studio (or whatever), you
can use its editing controls to clip out songs and save them separately,
clean them up, make fade-ins and outs, etc. and then organize into
collections to burn onto CDs (I use Toast for burning). Bias Peak probably
does all the same stuff or more (since it costs more). I never used Sound
Soap but I tried another noise filter program whose name I've forgotten
right now but which I didn't buy because I didn't think it was worth the
money. However if you have very old and scratchy records to record, some
such program can filter out a lot of the noise, so they say.

Anyway it sure is fun to collect all kinds of music from various sources
and then make your own custom audio CDs with it. My mom still had a lot of
the old records that I listened to as a little kid, and I recorded them
into the Mac and burned them back out onto CDs for my little girl to listen
to, and we made copies for her friends. From classical radio programs I've
been able to collect all sorts of music and make, for example, CDs of just
waltzes. "Oldies" radio stations are sources of old-time rock and roll, and
I've made CDs of just Beach Boys, all Elvis (I.m showing my age), and so
forth. I have also recorded very old Victrola records and made CDs of World
War One songs etc. All it takes is the Griffin iMic connected to the Mac,
some such program as Sound Studio, and a cable or two (possibly with
adapters) to connect the iMic to whatever source of music you have. After
you figure out how to work whatever recording/editing software you choose,
it's easy and fun. You will enjoy it.
