I am trying to network my iMac to my Beige, 2 G3 PowerBooks, 6500 and a Q840av. One PowerBook and the Beige G3 are using 10.2.6 and the rest of the Macs are using 9.2.2.

I am familiar with Sharing and Networking Macs over Ethernet as well as with
Airport. What I am having trouble with is the fact that I am trying to set
up the iMac so I can use my dial up modem setting as well as my Ethernet
sharing settings without having to change either when I want to connect
online or network. It seems that I must either choose PPP in the TCPIP panel
to get online or choose Ethernet to network between computers.

If you're file sharing over AppleTalk (ethertalk), then you'll have no problem. Just point your IP stack at the PPP device and AppleTalk at the ethernet device.

If you're file sharing over AppleTalk (IP), then what you want won't work directly. The Open Transport software (your IP stack) in your iMac has its routing capabilities disabled, so it can "use" only one network device at a time - PPP or Ether. You can enable routing by installing a product like IPNetRouter (by Sustworks; http://www.sustworks.com/). Another alternative is to use the Location Manager, which is accessable from the control strip to switch IP configurations for you. That will at least make switching from PPP to Ether easier.

...With all these Macs... It might be easier in the long run to just set up a full LAN and a NAT Router/firewall. Then all the Macs will have access to the 'net and they'll all be able to connect to your shared volumes, etc. A product like IPNetRouter, running on one of the Macs, will let you share your PPP connection and can easily be reconfigured if you upgrade that connection. Other off-the-shelf solutions, such as LinkSys and Belkin boxes would also work, but only the higher end products support PPP (they're mostly for cable and xdsl).

ObDisclaimer: I'm a Sustwork Reseller. I love IPNetRouter; use it at home and at customer sites. If you want IPNetRouter, let me know - I have good pricing. :)
