Without question, this is the Thanks- that was my suggstion to him- route it to Apple ASAP. Turns out that it displays an "X" for the charging state with the battery installed; and zero uptime if he unplugs once booted. There's a guy in his dept. that he could swap adapters or batteries with but in a 5 min test that would not necessarily show definitively if it was just an adapter, battery or mainboard issue on his end.
