Thanks- that was my suggstion to him- route it to Apple ASAP.  Turns out
that it displays an "X" for the charging state with the battery installed;
and zero uptime if he unplugs once booted.

There's a guy in his dept. that he could swap adapters or batteries with
but in a 5 min test that would not necessarily show definitively if it was
just an adapter, battery or mainboard issue on his end.

Here's hoping he sends it off shortly.  The phone call hold time has been
making him put it off, I suspect.
