You'll need more RAM. X will run with 64 (so long as you don't run classic mode), but it *really* struggle. Best to have at least 128 MB; preferably 256 MB.
Bios basically = firmware
You could do one of two things:
1) Try running the 4.1.9 firmware updater from the CD, and it will tell you if the update has been applied already.
2) Boot the Mac with Command-Option-O-F held down. Will boot to open firmware. Version will be in text at top of screen.
