Hi Everybody,

On my Son's system (Beige G4 466 MHz OS 9.2.2) he has a MIDI
keyboard for piano instruction and a HP 855c which gets switched back
and forth in the printer port. Unfortunately it is really unstable.
Right now I have not been able to get the printer to work for a week.
Neither the piano keyboard nor the printer want Appletalk on but for the
MIDI to work I also have the switch where Appletalk goes through so that
it would go through a different port, like ethernet. Then the MIDI
works but when I switch it back the printer does not work anymore.=(
I read in Mac Help that in OS 9 sometimes the ports have difficulty
switching and it advised a reboot. Did it. Did not work. When I try
to print I keep getting the message,"Status of:"Compose, MIDI and
printer in printer port":serial port is already open or in use." So, it
appears that the cpu thinks that MIDI is still going through the printer
port. I do not know why it would. Is there anything else I can do to
get the printer working? Oh, the 855c needs apatch for )S 9 but I did
that aready.

I just found out that midi devices frequently hog the serial ports. I've been told there are apps. that help. "Serial Killer", Serial Setter" amd "CommCloser" are all supposed to work but I have not been able to find any of them to download. Know where?

Thanks,
        Anand
