Anand,
Which MIDI interface are you using? What are you using for a driver?
(OMS, FreeMIDI, Apple MIDI Tools)? What application are you using?
Does this application have its own proprietary driver (like Finale)?
Are you plugged into the modem port? Do you have a modem or another serial
device that forces you to swap? Does AppleTalk NEED to be on for some
reason?
Many questions, but, generally:
* yes, MIDI is a serial hog, and for good reason.. the MIDIinterface is
handling an intense external clock translation, allowing the
humongously face CPU speed to be subservient to the sloggingly
slow (but marvelously efficient) MIDI code speed of 31+k
* if you are using some sort of port expander, plug your modem, printer
etc. into the expander and dedicate one of the hard serial ports
to the MIDI device, then leave it alone(!)
* if you can, direct AppleTalk to the ethernet port, and DON'T let OMS
(if using that) turn it off when prompted; tell OMS to mind its
own business! ;-) (you can turn off the OMS query in the "preferences"
panel)
* Give your computer a good zap of the PRAM, turn off AppleTalk (and
Filesharing), rechoose your printer (in printer port?) and try printing.
You may also have to trash the MIDI driver's preferences and rebuild
your setup to reset IT.
Reach me off (or on..) list for more questions,
Best regards,
Dana
