Do you have more than one ata device on a single cable? If you do not then you can ignore the following.

My HD's are the only devices on their respective cables. But I never ignore anything anyone says when they're trying to help me with a problem I have.

Occasionally conflict in ata device master/slave settings SEEM to work but result in very strange behavior under certain circumstances. This is true of ALL ata devices. (you mentioned other ata devices) You need to know ALL the ata device settings not just the hard drives.

Er...um...well...huh? I thought just the HD's were ata... Shows my lack of technical smarts! What other devices are ATA?

And it is not difficult to set them so that there is no possible conflict. Even though the card may support cable select it is not clear that MacOS 10 will cooperate with that card.

An ata device conflict may not be the problem. It may or may not be part of the problem. I can't think of any reason to leave device conflict in doubt when it is so easy to clearly define the devices. Knowing what ALL device specifications are can sometimes help.

Easy? Did you say easy? How so?

BTW, thanks to Bill Ove, I have been able to re-set OSX (this solution is in another message) and re-entered all my users' information exactly as it was before losiing it, and apparently have about 99% of my previous configurations back. But I do have some quirky things happen at times (always have had them), and if device conflict might have something to do with them maybe I should, as you say, remove that possibility. Especially if it's easy!
