Beige ata bus problems

It seems like I did something that killed the second bus (ata bus 01).  
I've switched devices and cables around enough now to know that the 
only thing that seems not to work right is the bus itself.

Is there anything I could have done to cause this?  Any way I can check 
it?

When I put a bootable HD in bus 0, System Profiler simply shows nothing 
on bus 01.

On the other hand, I can't get it to start up unless I do have 
something plugged in to bus 01.

Any ideas anyone?
