I'm pretty sure the Beige G3 cannot boot from a firewire drive, and I'm guessing the PPC 9600 cannot either. I tried it anyway on my Beige G3 266mHz Rev 1, and it did not work. It does work fine as an external hard drive, just can't boot from it. I guess you could always swap them out if your internal hard drive fails.
