You are correct. Heck, I can't even boot off an external device on my
B&W G3. Far as I know, firewire boot didn't start until the first G4.

I'm pretty sure the Beige G3 cannot boot from a firewire drive, and I'm
guessing the PPC 9600 cannot either.

As far as I know, any Mac that supports Open Firmware and comes with a built-in Firewire port supports Firewire booting. You press & hold "option" on the keyboard before the chime sounds on a boot and will be presented with a selection of all the bootable drives. Select the Firewire drive and press the continue arrow.

For older Mac's like the Beige & PowerMac's (including the 9600) you can get xPostFacto 3.0a11 from Versiontracker.com and it will enable booting from Firewire for OS X Jaguar & Panther. This works with PCI Firewire cards. It does this by enabling the Firewire card very early in the boot process, and also splitting the boot process using an internal drive as a "helper". The boot begins on the internal drive and then switches to the Firewire as soon as the card is enabled, which is very early. I'm on a 7500 G4 using Firewire drives to boot from, its been wonderful.

One warning: Panther 10.3 -> 10.3.2 has a Firewire "bug" issue, and it's severe. I'm only beginning to fully understand it. Apple has contended that it only effects Firewire 800 devices, but this is not true, it effects many Firewire 400 drives also. Files become corrupted during Startup, Restart, Shutdown or Sleep. As long as the drive isn't connected during any of these processes, it's fine. This means that booting certain drives will result in lost data. For more information read:

I'm using and Indigita chipset enclosure to boot from which is immune so far. My Oxford enclosures are effected and have lost data. My Initio enclosure hasn't lost data, but has frozen and lost communication. Be sure to have a full backup if you're going to use Firewire with Panther. Jaguar is immune and works perfectly for booting.
