I'll make one assumption: "Open Firmware" is the firmware on every Mac? Not only does the B/W G3 not support firewire booting, the firmware doesn't even support the Startup Manager (holding the Option key).

As far as I know, any Mac that supports Open Firmware and comes with a built-in Firewire port supports Firewire booting. You press & hold "option" on the keyboard before the chime sounds on a boot and will be presented with a selection of all the bootable drives. Select the Firewire drive and press the continue arrow.

Thanks,
