You might want to check this page at Accelerate Your Mac (good resource).
http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/G3-ZONE/yosemite/internalmodem.html
It is a bit dated (1999) but it does address some of the earlier issues with
the Blue/White Internal modems. Seems the major issues were disconections
(apparently resolved by disabling the FaxSTF software) and connection rates
of the modem scripts. Don't know if these issues still remain. If so,
would an external USB modem be a better choice than the internal modem?
<http://www.macresq.com> has the Global Village TelePort 56k Internal Modem
for G3 Blue & White for $39.99. New/Factory Sealed.
Zoom (who acquired Global Village) has the Zoom/FaxModem 56K USB Model 2986
for Mac-(8.5 or above) at: <http://www.powermax.com> for about $95.
Best Data (who acquired Diamond/Supra) has two USB External modems.
available at: <http://www.macconnections.com> and <http://www.powermax.com>
for about $50.
The Smart One 56K V.90 Plus USB External Controller-based modem-(OS
9.x & above)
56K V.92 LITE EXT USB MACINTOSHEXT HARDWARE BASE MODEM-(8.5-9.0)
Also try: <http://www.nextag.com> for brands, sellers and prices.
I am not sure who makes the most compatible, plug/play USB or serial modems
for Macs. I have used several companies (Zoom, Global Village & Diamond
SupraExpress). Had problems with a Global Village serial modem when I
upgraded one Mac to 9.1, but then the company never said it would work with
9.1. I deleted the fax software and it was okay. SupraExpress has always
worked.
Kind regards,
Abbe
