Greg,

I would have to agree with Jack. I just went through this very dilemma. My
old G3's were being used by my daughters. As they got older, both wanted to
go to OS X, have DVD playing capabilities, etc. As much as I loved the Beige
boxes, the bus speed and "old world" attributes of the beige box just could
not meet their needs. Even with "over clocked" chips, hacked DVD players,
upgraded drives and video cards the investment vs performance was getting to
high ( I suppose the fact that they occasionally do video/DVD recording work
on my G4 had something to do with it as well) .

I bought both of them a Blue and White G3. I looked specifically for the Rev
2 boxes and 350 MHz or over. These units solved the the speed issues and the
OS upgrade issues. Both of those units are running OS 10.3.2 very well. Fast
and stable. Hardware upgrades are easy. The 100 MHz system bus is as fast as
the early G4 platforms, and if you want to do a CPU upgrade, you can still
do the ZIF. They should carry through about 3 to 5 years before they become
"ancient" enough that Apple will not support software upgrades any longer.
I have been able to sell the Beige boxes on eBay to recoup some of the cost.

If you are comfortable with OS 9, and a lower speed machine for basic uses,
the Beige is a rock solid computer. If you are looking for additional speed,
video recording options, and better Apple system support, it is probably
time to upgrade the computer.

If you haven't yet moved to OS X it will be uncomfortable at first. Once you
get used to the changes, you will wonder why you did not do it sooner.

Just my .02 cents.
