Hi,
I have come to the point where I need to either bump up the speed and storage on my stock G3/233/4gig beige desktop or get something newer and faster. The only thing I have changed is the memory which is now at 416mb.
I see the OWC ads promoting the G4/450-533mhz upgrade for $150.00, but never have figured out what besides the G4 processor I would have to buy.
I guessing that I would need a larger hard drive and wonder if I can just replace the hard drive with a larger one of the same type and not have to buy a controller.
I would like to end up being able to use Jaguar after the upgrades and have a faster machine which would remain trouble free.
Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.
You have a classic dilemma. To make yours run nicely with OS X the upgrades are a sound choice. You would want a processor upgrade, a larger HD, and decent PCI video card (64MB VRAM) and max out the memory. Would make a decent everyday machine, however, one that would always be limited by the 66 MHz system bus. Say the upgrades run $250.00 for all the bits and pieces from good sources. Figure the Beige DT is worth at least $100.00 and you've got a net cost of $350.00 not counting what your time is worth.
That's getting into an area where with a little additional money you are looking at the price of used, later model Mac with faster bus, etc.,etc. Should you want to run a program like iDVD or GarageBand, you'll still be stymied by your upgraded DT. My 2W is run the numbers, look at what you want to be able to do with it when you're done, and then decide if the upgrade is the best value?
Old Mac's may run damn near forever but sometimes the best choice is replace it?
