Sorry this is late. Forgot it was in my drafts folder...
Should I: 1. Settle for a 40 gig HD?
Bigger is always better. With hard drive space I have one motto: It is better to have and not need, then need and not have...
2. Consider a processor upgrade?
Sorry to sound like a broken record, but faster is always better too. Of
course, both processor speed and hard drive size has everything to do with
the type of computing you do. Obviously, if you plan to use iMovie a lot
you'll need a bigger drive and more processor speed. If you just want to
check your email and store an occasional digital photo, then 40 GB and the
stock processor is fine.
3. Upgrade the video card?
Ah... one of my pet peeves. Personally, I believe upgrading video cards are
a waste of time and money. I read about the ATI Radeon Mac Edition that came
out a while ago. If memory serves, the article basically said that on older
Macs it would only enhance 2D graphics, but not 3D graphics (i.e., no cool
cube rollover in Panther). The only reason I can really see (and believe me,
I'm
no expert) to upgrade the video card is if you are a hard core gamer.
4. Use a DVD-ROM that doesn't ship with Mac software (people have done it but...; and is there a performance difference between internal and external drives?
I put a Samsung Combo drive (CD-R/W, DVD Reader) in mine. I was using a 4x
USB burner. The Samsung works with the Finder and is 32x. It rocks.
5. Use the 2 available PCI slots for...? I'm thinking a FW/USB combo card and maybe a TV tuner.
Well, no sense in *trying* to use the slots. The Mac has built in FW and USB
already. The use for the slots will come in time...
Thanks,
Glenn
