Hello- I am working for a non profit that has a Power
Mac G3. With 3 partioned drives 17gb, 4gb and 4gb. and
I think 385mb memory. We will be using the machine for
slide scanning, photoshop and dreamweaver.
What are the advantages or disadvantages of upgrading to OS x.
OS X will allow you to run the latest versions of most apps on your G3. Excluded are products that require the G4/G5's Altavec (floating point/vector) instruction set - like some Photoshop plug-ins etc.
OS X is inherently slow on a G3 - so you're sacrificing performance.
Classic (the OS 9 emulator that runs under X) is MUCH slower than real directly-booted OS 9, and does not provide full support for some peripherals (some scanners etc).
...Make sure you can get drivers for your slide scanners!
IMO, if your intention is to do production graphics work, you're better off sticking with OS 9.2.2 and adding more RAM. Don't go to X unless you have a specific software or hardware product that absolutely requires it, or you've upgraded to a G4 processor.
FWIW, - Dan.
