Thank you Amanda and James for this info on how to use a G4 ZIF in a B&W.

Hi Anand,

I just did this one.

While Apple refused to comment on the issue, the 1.1 upgrade was
issued to correct PCI card timing issues and insert code to prevent
the B&W from starting with a G4 CPU installed. Heh, 1.1 =was= a fix.
Perhaps Apple would rather sell new G4 machines, than allow people to
pop an upgrade CPU in their G3.

Anyhow... the folks that provide CPU upgrade kits also provide a
patch to remove the G4 block. Pretty simple... run the patch and
restart the machine while holding down the "Programmer's Button". You
should get a small finder window saying your machine is G4 ready.
Install the new CPU, start it up and rock 'n roll!

Bruce (my B&W) is a 300mHz Rev 1 model, running 10.2.8, 1GB ram, with
the original 6GB plus a 60GB IDE drive. I just installed an XLR8 MACh
Speed G4 Zif 466 mHz and it's working great. (Note: In the B&W
machines, the XLR8 upgrades run a little slower than their advertised
speed. My 466 runs at 450.)

So... sure you can run a G4 in your machine... just takes a little
preparation!

Amanda

However that involves a rather pricey new module from some OEM. What I'm hoping for is someway to reuse a G4 ZIF someone else no longer needs as they have upgraded. So, what I guess I'm looking for is a patch I can download? Anyone know where to find that?

TIA,
       Anand
