Partitioning is done with your disk utility software. Do this *before* you
install the OS, etc.

Why? Depends on use.
Do you need to *boot* into OS 9? Put it on the first partition.
Do your apps need scratch disks? Separate partition.
Some folks like to keep the OS separate from the apps (as is possible) and
the data. Separate partitions allow for simpler backup (e.g.data).

I have 2 x 128GB disks in my tower.
Separate partitions for each OS (9 and X)
Separate partition for data
Separate partition for downloads
Separate partitions for my powerbook and tower OS X backup
Separate partition for video editing
- wiped clean at the end of each session

There's some more, but you get the idea.

Note that there are some folks who don't partition at all and claim to be
very happy with the set-up.
