Are you talking about usb outboard digitizers when you say you're not encouraged, or are you also including firewire a/d,d/a converters? My experience with the real time firewire digitizer in my Canon zr40 camcorder has been very good. Digitized image look exactly like the originals when viewed on an analog monitor. Artifacts like dropped frames or noise that wasn't on the tape just aren't issues.
When I first started computer video I was depressed at how my work looked on the computer screen, until I learned that the end output on a TV looked great. (I got a lot of direction and reassurance from this list about it.) That's why iMovie and Final Cut and Premiere all give the option to do firewire output during editing. (Firewire port to d/a converter to monitor.) This allows you to view your work in real time on a video monitor. The images are brighter and represent exactly what you'll see when outputting to tape or DVD or VCD. Got to use an analog monitor when doing color correcting, for example. Just thought I'd mention this as a consideration when evaluating video digitizer output quality. Rich -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
