Well, if OP means Original Poster (instead of Observation Post or
something-- which is what it meant to us in the Army), that's me and the
reason I want to involve the Mac is to use iMovie to edit out all the
superfluous video in my Hi-8 home movies, which is to say most of it :-)
and create home-movie masterpieces for other family members to view and
appreciate.

Then I want to sent the edited productions out from the Mac to VHS tapes,
because all the relatives have VCRs but not all have DVD players yet. I
think I'll probably buy this gadget to get the video in and out of the Mac:
http://eshop.macsales.com/Catalog_Item.cfm?ID=6339&Item=MIGDC2INTL.

Which reminds me, I was over at a Target store today and I looked into
their electronics section, and I noticed that they have these DVD recorders
that also accept VHS tapes, and one of the sales kids there told me that
you can use them to record from a VHS videocassette onto a DVD. Is that
right?

If that's true, then I wouldn't have to replace the CD-RW in my Mac with a
Superdrive to burn DVDs of my videos. Instead I could output from the Mac
to the VCR part of the box, to get it onto videotape, and then burn it over
to a DVD on the other side of the same box. Anybody see any reason why that
wouldn't work?

Another thing: once I have my home movie recorded on a videocassette, I'd
want to make copies for relatives. To do that, would I just stack another
VCR on top of the first one, and copy from the master videocassette in the
first VCR to blank ones in the second VCR?

And if I can do that, then can old VHS movies be similarly copied, or do
they have protection schemes to prevent it? For instance I have this old
VHS copy of the 1965 movie Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines
that I like to look at once in awhile, and I thought a relative might enjoy
it too, so I went to Amazon.com to get another copy for him, but discovered
that they don't make them anymore, either on VHS or DVD. In fact, there
were a few old used copies being offered for over $100 each! Shazaam! I
should put my copy of it in a vault! But is it possible to copy this movie
onto a blank videocassette using two VCRs? I should quit playing the
valuable master lest I wear it out. Sorry if this last is a little OT, but
it strikes me that it would be neat to be able to back up old movies like
that, especially rare ones. Is it possible, using twin VCRs?
