I am sure I've missed 500 steps along the way, but I can't figure out what they are.
I have a beige G3 with OS 9.1 (up till yesterday, I thought it was 9.2.2 for some reason) and I put a 3-port USB 2.0 into one of the empty pci slots. It doesn't look like it's recognized in the system profiler, but I'm not sure it's supposed to be. I connected the epson stylus photo 820 printer to the USB slot, downloaded the drivers for the printer (my dog ate - well, cracked - the CD that comes with the printer) and installed them. I chose the epson in the chooser, although it would only let me choose the printer port or the modem port. Actually, it really pitched a fuss when I tried to chose printer port, and only let me choose modem port. So, I "chose" modem port, even though the modem is connected to the modem port. When I try to print something, the printer window comes up, tries to print, and I get a communication error. Duh! The communication error *really* started when I wanted to chose something other than modem or printer port! (Now I know what 4-year-olds feel like when their parents tell them they can wear the red pants or the blue pants, and they really want the yellow shorts!) An unrelated item - because I had thought, as I said in the first paragraph, that I had 9.2.2 on this, I went searching at apple.com for the downloads for 9.2.1 and 9.2.2. When I downloaded these, I got an error message, "the shrinkwrap engine has reported an error." I'm assuming, especially on the 9.2.1, that the download didn't complete, even though my download manager calls it complete. What do I do? And, as importantly, I was going to get the 9.2.2 upgrade because I thought I needed it (or might want it). The apple.com site touted it as a must-have if you have OS X and are using an OS9 with it. I don't yet have OS X installed. Is having OS X the only reason to have 9.2.2? That sounds kind of silly to me. Thanks!
