The Sony DV camcorder that can also play old tapes into a Mac via Firewire sounds like a good solution. But I'm also interested in getting the edited video back out onto videotape and/or DVD without a lot of hassle. So I'm looking at these two video Firewire video converters that OWC sells: http://eshop.macsales.com/Catalog_Item.cfm?ID=6339&Item=MIGDC2INTL and http://eshop.macsales.com/Item_MailList.cfm?ID=5593&Item=ADSAPI550. One costs nearly twice as much as the other ($165 vs. $300) but the more expensive one has lots of input and output ports and it looks like you can hook your old alalog camcorder up to it and run a cable both to the Mac and to other items like monitors, VCRs, etc. and do lots of video importing and exporting in different formats. I'm still open to all options, but I'm sort of leaning towards that right now.
I'd love to hear from anybody who has one or the other of the above gadgets and/or who can compare the two technically.
