I once tried this also, and learned the hard way that all IDE-Firewire bridges are not equal. Many Firewire bridges designed for optical drives won't work correctly with magnetic hard drives. Sometimes you can flash the firmware to fix this, but early ones were "either" but not "both", so if you successfully converted, you'd have to flash again if you needed to use a CD, CDR or DVD unit.
