thanks to everyone who got back with info.

it does seem to be the monitor that's faulty, not the card or the mac. my
concern was that the mac was playing up and would repeat the problem when we
plugged another monitor into it.

luckily, formac have agreed to come and pick it up and repair it for the
price of haulage (�30) so it's not to bad. not overly impressed though as we
had to send one back already when it developed a fault that meant the
monitor randomly turned itself off when it felt like it...

so all is not lost and luckily we had a monitor sitting in the office we
could use.

thanks again for the help, good to know whats going on inside these things!
