I own a N656U and my only complaint is the very limited support for it under OS X. You have to be running Photoshop or Photoshop Elements to use the scanner natively in OS X; otherwise you must use the Classic drivers (which function flawlessly with my iBook G3, btw ...). Good general scanner. Small and portable even.

I have an ibook and an imac.
I am looking for a good scanner for OCRing an old book.
I am confused about the usb 1 & 2 speeds.

*Canon CanoScan N650U Flatbed Scanner
I read reviews at epinion and it said this computer does not scan 3 D objects or even a magazine with a crease
It said the paper must be completely flat, while others said it scanned books good.

*Canon CanoScan LiDE 20 Flatbed Scanner
There was not much reviews on this scanner except it is a good scanner.

They come with OmniPage.

Does anyone have either of these scanners?
Could someone tell me if they know off hand if all imac or all ibooks are usb 2?

We have a N656U and an LIDE 30. Both very good general purposes scanners. OmniPage is a good OCR program. The version included free is a "lite" but it more than handles my occasional OCR needs. The LIDE 30 gets the lions share of duty around here because it is supported under OSX. The N656U only runs under Classic.

They will accommodate a thick book. You will have a page binding shadow, depending on the books thickness, layout and margins. Like all flatbed scanners they work best with an object laid flat against the plate. I'm not sure what is meant by "won't handle 3 D objects"? The lid can be opened completely and anything you can sit on it will scan the surface against the glass fine.

I would not be concerned about either as a general purpose scanner. The "killer deal" right now appears to be the LIDE 30. It, as well as the N656U and LIDE 20 are all discontinued as the new models have come out, and the retailers have some killer pricing.

The iMac did not add USB 2 ports until September 2003, the iBook in October 2003 with the G4 iBooks.
