I put in the OS X (10.3.2) install CD and opened Disk Utility to partition the drive. After partitioning, I installed 10.3.2 on one partition. I then rebooted from an OS 9.2.1 install CD (a retail CD, not one from another computer) with the intention to install 9.2.1 (then update to 9.2.2) on the second partition.
However, when I double-clicked on the installer, it displayed a message "This software will not run on this computer." I thought that perhaps the problem was my having installed X before 9, so I opened Drive Setup on the 9 CD (hoping to re-partition the drive and then install 9 before X) but the Drive Setup window did not show the hard drive at all.
I called Apple Tech Support and was told that they do not support partitioning. They told me to re-install the OS 9 package from the OS X install CD (because I had erased it when I partitioned), which I did. However, the installer forced me to install OS 9 on the same partition as OS X.
The computer can be booted into OS 9 by using the Startup Disk System Preference. However, OS 9 does not appear as a choice when using the Startup Manager because the two OSs are on the same partition.
QUESTION: Is there a way to put OS 9 and OS X on separate partitions with this machine?
Thanks in advance,
Herb Goodfriend
