However, when I double-clicked on the installer, it displayed a message "This software will not run on this computer." I thought that perhaps the problem was my having installed X before 9, so I opened Drive Setup on the 9 CD (hoping to re-partition the drive and then install 9 before X) but the Drive Setup window did not show the hard drive at all.
That is the error you will get if the OS 9 disk will not work on a particluar Mac. It does not matter if it's retail. It might work in, say, my G4 733 Quicksilver, but doesn't have the correct system enablers for your MDD. Do you have the 9 disk that shipped with it?
Also, my wife has a MDD and it is set up to load OS 9 *after* OS X is loaded. It only works with the "Restore" disk that ships with it. The Restore disk has a "Classic Support" option (i.e., OS 9). It is a strange setup and is more evidence of the move away from OS 9. Classic and dual booting are still supported. When I booted to an OS 9 CD I could not see the drive even though the OS 9 drivers had been loaded.
QUESTION: Is there a way to put OS 9 and OS X on separate partitions with this machine?
Yes. Use the OEM Restore disk that came with it.
Thanks,
Glenn
