Also, my wife has a MDD and it is set up to load OS 9 *after* OS X is
loaded. It only works with the "Restore" disk that ships with it. The
Restore disk has a "Classic Support" option (i.e., OS 9). It is a
strange setup and is more evidence of the move away from OS 9. Classic
and dual booting are still supported. When I booted to an OS 9 CD I
could not see the drive even though the OS 9 drivers had been loaded.

This is indeed a strange setup, a veritable never-never-land.

Here's what I did with my 2003 MDD.

I installed OS X and the OS 9 from the OS X install CD just as you did
on the same partition. Then boot classic in OS X.

You now should be able put in your retail OS 9 and double click on the
installer and choose a separate partition.

I did this and I was able to install OS 9 on the second partition. That System Folder did appear in the Startup Disk System Preference in OS X and it also appeared in the Startup Manager. However, when I tried to boot to it the machine did not recognize it and I got the famous blinking question mark.

I will try what Glenn suggested (use the OEM Restore Disk).

Thank you both for the explanation and suggestions.
