Back up as much as you can while the computer  is still on. Mine did 
the same thing once, then I lost it again. I did not have a chance to 
back up everything before I lost it again. A friend took my HD and 
tested it and it is fine. He also backed up the rest of my stuff for 
me. We still do not know why it would not mount. He is thinking it 
could be the motherboard, but isn't sure until he can test it.

Bottom line -- my missing HD just reappeared just as suddenly as it
disappeared!! In fact, I'm booted up on it now.  Here's what happened:
As I'd said I was going to do in reply to Greg Burkman's praise of
DiskWarrior, I was on my way to check out Alsoft's website. I clicked 
my
desktop shortcut for Netscape to go on the web when I got a weird error
message and I couldn't quit out of Netscape. Restart from the Finder's
Special Menu wouldn't reboot the computer either. Then I got the idea
that since it was a Netscape error yesterday that immediately
precipitated the HD disappearance, maybe I didn't want to "lose" my 
other
OS 9 HD also. I went to the control panels to select my OS 8 HD as the
startup disk, and lo and behold --

THE MISSING HARD DRIVE WAS LISTED!!!!!!!! AND ALL THREE OF THEM ARE ON 
MY
DESKTOP!!!

Apple System Profiler lists them all again also. :-D
But.....how could this be?
I'm getting rid of that desktop shortcut and will boot Netscape the 
way I
used to. And (yes, Greg!) I'll still check into DiskWarrior just in 
case
I don't get so lucky the next time.
