~Yersinia. --- end of quote --- Mac Mysteries. I didn't catch which machine you are using, but this used to happen to me all the time on my Beige. It never happened on drives that were attached to my 133 ATA pci board but drives on my motherboard ide bus could disappear. Characteristic of a drive not appearing was a beeping sound from the drive (Maxtor) at boot time. This was possible in os 9 and X too, though occasionally a drive would appear in X that was temporarily invisible to 9. That is a different problem and usually a repair in X's Disk Utility restored the drive for 9. It was NEVER a bad drive and I never lost data. My usual cure was to turn the computer off, wait a minute or two to be sure the drives had spun down completely, then restart. That usually worked or would after I had done it a couple of times. I also reset the p ram repeatedly (folks say 10 times at least) and once or twice hit the motherboard reset button. That might have worked too, I don't remember. There is a way to accomplish the same thing by resetting the firmware, but I don't know exactly how. I will also say that Norton, nor Tech Tool nor Disk Warrior ever solved this problem for me. I haven't had the problem in a long time. Three out of my four drives are on the pci card, only one on the motherboard now so that is probably why. On the older machines, a pci ATA board is like a miracle. Your data appears 5 times faster or better, and the thing is very reliable. Worth the $50 or so. I don't know the language or technology, but I think the machine gets confused when it checks out the drives at startup. As a result, it seemed to me never possible to see or remount the drive with any utility without at least a cold reboot. I don't know if this helps, but maybe it is a comfort to know that others have seen it and lived through it. Rich -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
