Anyone happy/unhappy with their fax machine?
I'm about to break down and buy one.
It does not have to be fast or fancy - no extra bells and whistles needed.
I want a machine that is inexpensive but a solid performer.

Jim,

I use a fax machine constantly in my business. Faxing from the computer just does not work with what I need to fax.

I have been happy with Brothers machines. I have owned two of them over the fifteen years I have had my business. I just wore out the second one. Since I was also in need of a new printer (wore that out too) and did not have a scanner at work, I decided to check out the All-In-One machines. The price was similar to buying an individual printer and fax machine.

I bought one of the HP all-in-ones. I have had it about two weeks now. It prints, copies, scans, faxes, and reads memory cards from a digital camera. All of the features work well. There are Mac drivers for OS 9 through 10.3. The printer and fax machine are much better than what they replaced. It however is not a photo-quality printer. The scanner is comparable to a stand alone scanner we bought for home about 18 months ago. The copier is a copier. It does B&W as well as color copies, and reduces and enlarges. The memory card slots work pretty much like any standard card reader.

The HP wants to use its own software, which is kind of Windows-ish, but not to bad. You can set it up to scan into PhotoShop or a number of other programs. It will not import directly into iPhoto (may be important to some people) but downloaded photos can be easily transferred to iPhoto.

The model I purchased came with a network interface. I have it connected to a router, so it can be accessed by a couple of different machines (both OS 9 and OSX) The network interface is an option on many of the HP printers.

The HP AIO machines are the only ones I found with consumer replaceable print heads (about $20 each - there are 4 of them). They also clearly list the machine's monthly duty cycles. (probably how I wore out the Epson) Most of the HP machines have a document feeder so you can fax multiple page faxes. The cheapo machines fax one page from the scanner glass. Rather costly if you are faxing something to a long distance phone number.

That is about everything I can think of to tell you. At this point I am pretty happy with my new HP. But, I am still getting to know it.

Nancy
