You might want to check and see if the protocol you are using has been disabled on the 
Ethernet port. 
If I can recall my 16/600, you could enable and disable a protocol from each interface.

Say, for example, you are using AppleTalk and have it enabled on the [Mac] serial 
port, but not on the 
Ethernet port. In such a case, you would be able to only use it through the serial 
port.

If you don't have it already, you might want to pop over to Apple's site and get the 
manual.
