Thanks Bruce,

Reading some of the upgraded posts here, I honestly feel that I might also
be getting in over my head in terms of the actual *doing*. Most of this is
gibberish to me.

Then ask the questions...the only dumb question is the one you don't ask.

What is a G4 Yikes machine? or Sawtooth? (As you can probably tell, while I
am a Mac lover, I am in the point and click category! (well a bit above
that, but not much!!)

The G4 'Yikes' is the very first generation G4 Powermac from Apple, and is essentially a Blue and White G3 with a G4 processor in it and a different color scheme for the case.

So named because some Apple engineer said "Yikes! We gotta have a G4 Mac in time for Christmas and the new motherboard deign isn't working! Quick, lodge brothers! Get out the duct tape and spray paint!" (Note this isn't the OFFICIAL Apple line...;-)

It was only made for a short while. They're ok systems, but since you can get the identical thing by buying an older, cheaper B&W G3 and a G4 upgrade, they're not overwhelmingly valuable.

The G4 'Sawtooth' is the next generation of G4 PowerMac. It has AGP graphics not PCI, and a different processor setup than the previous PowerMacs. (this means a different kind of upgrade card is needed) This has a 100 Mhz bus (versus 66 in the older models, higher megahertz means the system runs faster, in general.)

This means it can access memory faster and use faster video cards and thus run faster.

This is a good model to look for if you want to upgrade because it will take up to dual 1.25Ghz processors, a gig of RAM, and a high-end video card and be a very good performer, easily equal (pr nearly so) to any other G4 Powermac ever made.

Whether this kind of upgrading is for you is dependent on your ability to follow directions and manual dexterity, it's more of a mechanical skill set than a computer one, since you're physically assembling things.
