First, thanks to all for all the help and advise.
In the meantime, I removed the hard drive and replaced the original drive on which I had installed OS 10.2.3 and OS 9 (the old 6 GB one).
Everything has been working even better than before.
Does this make sense? Can the problems I was having be attributable to something with the hard drive?
