That is bad English derived from the upper/middle classes ignorantly following some illiterate royalty, as i discovered a few days ago.
I have just checked with a professional linguistic and BOTH are correct!
BTW you must have such a hang-up about the middle/upper classes that you have to put yourself down by writing "i" instead of "I".
